This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. (Amos 7:1)
Amos tells of “the king’s” harvest (Amos 7:1). Our King also has may scythes and is constantly using them for harvest. We try to take a brave stand before the scythe of pain, the shears of disappointment, or the sickle of death. And just as there is no way to cultivate a lawn like velvet without repeated mowing, there is no way to develop a life of balance, tenderness, and sympathy for others without enduring the work of God’s scythes.
Think of how often the Word of God compares people to grass, and God’s glory to its flower. But when the grass is cut, and desolation seems to reign where flowers once were blooming, the perfect time has come for God’s rain to fall as delicate showers.
Dear soul, God has been gardening you. Time and again the King has come to you with the sharp scythe. Do not fear this cycle- for it is sure to be followed by a refreshing, warm, beautiful shower. -Adapted from F.B. Meyer
