Cast down your burdens, and rest…

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22

We were not created to be stressed out, sleep deprived, short tempered zombies simply going through the motions of life. But yet it happens, and we feel that way from time to time. Why?

In my experience, when I find myself snapping like a turtle, it is usually because I have taken on too much and feel overwhelmed. We were never meant to carry these burdens that we heap on our backs. We were never meant to be over achievers, with heads spinning, going a thousand directions, juggling a thousand pending projects. We were designed to be dependent on Him, to trust in Him, and to rest. The Bible gives us specific instruction to rest! God tells us to rest, and not only that He actually tells us how to go about doing it. An instruction manual to rest- and boy do we need it!

Psalm 55 tells us to cast those burdens on the Lord. Toss ’em right up there. Get rid of them! And then stand up straight, breathe in and out a few times, and feel your perspective align.

Psalm 55 also tells us that God will sustain us. He will take our burdens and He will sustain us. Whew. To be sustained we need food, water, shelter, and rest. God promises to provide these things to us in the verses below; and in addition to those items we need to sustain our lives, He also promises to provide His grace.

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. (Matthew 6:31-32)

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Revel in His provisions for you. Revel in His plans for you. And this weekend, rest. Rest knowing that peace and grace surround you. Rest because you need to. Rest because the Bible tells you to. Rest because God designed you to do that. Rest your soul. Rest your brain. Rest. Turn off technology, put work aside, listen to the birds, feel the grass under your feet, rest.
